Omega 3 or fish oils are an important part of a healthy diet as they provide the essential fatty acids. They are essential because the human body cannot produce them, therefore we will have to intake a sufficial quantity through the food. Tons of studies have proven that a larger intake of fish oils have a beneficial effect on maintaining healthy blood colesterol levels, joints, and normal cadiac function. Fish oil should be a part of every diet, athlete or not!
To fully understand why the omega 3 is so important, one should understand that fatty acids can have different levels of saturation. The level of saturation in fatty acids, is determined by its molecular structure. Each carbon in a fatty acid carbon chain has four bonds. These bonds can either be single or double bonds. The remaining bonds that branch from the carbon backbone can be filled by other atoms (usually hydrogen).
SATURATED: Carbons are linked by single bonds. The two remaining bonds are filled with hydrogen.
UNSATURATED: There is one or more double bonds between carbons. The carbons attached by the double bond, can accept only one hydrogen atom.
MONOUNSATURATED: Has one double bond in its carbon chain.
POLYUNSATURATED: Has two or more double bonds.
When planning a diet, one should aim to increase the intake of mono- and especially polyunsaturated fatty acids, and lower the intake of saturated fatty acids. This can be a struggle as we will only find these “healhty acids in very few foods, therefore it becomes handy with Omega 3 supplements. The omega fatty acids are all unsaturated fatty acids.
Why Omega 3? Omega 3 is the most rare, but also the most useful fatty acid, as it may be used to synthesize other compounds. The omega 3 are used to form localized hormones known as “eicosanoids”, that cause dilation of blood vessels and reduce inflammation and blood clotting.
Omega 3 is not only helpfull in disease prevention, but it also have an effect in healty people. A sufficiel intake of these essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, will have a positive effect on some of the most important processes in the human body such the cell functioning and elasticity, and optimized fat metabolism, and it accelerates the absorption of fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, which is essential in repairing those tissues that may be injured during sporting events.
You don’t necessarily have to use supplements in order to reach the recommended intake of fish oil and the essential fatty acids it contains. Nevertheless it is very hard to reach a sufficient intake!
The highest quantities of polyunsaturated fatty acids can be found in foods like Avocado, soy milk, almonds, and fat fish.
Omega 3 is especially important for athletes aiming trying to minimize their fat intake, or people on a low-fat diet. One will obviously aim for a lower intake of fatty acids, and will thus haver a higher risk of not meeting the body’s need of essentiel fatty acids.
